No more prescription only courses

If you haven’t already had the letter from the PCT here is the mantra from the DoH

Changes to Regulations to implement the 2012/13 dental expenses settlement

A change is being introduced on 1 November 2012, where any claim for a prescription only, with a date of acceptance on or after this date will no longer receive 0.75 UDAs.  Courses of treatment with a date of acceptance on or after this date will receive no UDAs.  This change does not affect the design of the FP17 form or submission of data from dental practices.

Dentists and PCTs are reminded that the 2012/13 dental expenses settlement, which gave an uplift of 0.5% in April this year, included a change to the way UDAs are credited, removing the previous UDA credit for prescription only courses of treatment , ie. for courses of treatment which only contain a prescription and no other activity.  This reflects changes in clinical practice and removes potentially perverse incentives to issue prescriptions to patients which are not part of a full course of treatment. The regulatory change implementing this removal of UDA credit comes into force from 1 November 2012.  This does not change the patient charging arrangements in which courses of treatment which only contain a prescription and no other activity are not chargeable to patients.
